In an era defined by digital communication, there’s something truly special about the tradition of sending care packages to our fellow servicemen and women deployed overseas. It’s a tangible reminder of the bond that exists between military members, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) exemplifies this spirit of camaraderie through its dedicated efforts to send care packages to fellow VFW members who are deployed overseas.
The Chicago Fire Department has a few of its members who are also VFW members deployed overseas on active duty military status. In an effort to support them while deployed, fellow VFW members came together to collect supplies and other goods and spend the weekend backing boxes and shipped them off to the middle east.
Care packages have long held a special place in the hearts of servicemen and women. They’re a physical embodiment of love, support, and gratitude and a taste of home to those stationed thousands of miles away.
Deployments can be grueling, marked by separation from loved ones, unfamiliar environments, and challenging conditions. In these moments, receiving a care package can provide a welcome reprieve, reminding servicemen and women of the community that stands behind them. VFW members, who have walked the same path and understand the emotions that come with deployment, curate these packages with a keen understanding of what will bring comfort and a sense of home.
With the support of our community, post members packed 34 boxes full of non-perishable items and toiletries and shipped them off.
